For the fifth time that day, London caught herself daydreaming. At this rate, she would have to work on Saturday in order to make up for all the time wasted today. Her phone buzzed and she grinned after picking it up.
All week, Dylan had texted her jokes and cat memes. His latest featured a brown and white cat tangled up in a bra with the words, âNooooo! Itâs a Booby Trap!â She bit her lip to fight against the wave of laughter rising up and glanced around to see if anyone was looking at her before putting down the phone.
That was the problem with knowing someone for almost 20 years. They knew your biggest weaknesses. London loved cats, but her allergies growing up ruled out having cats or dogs at home. Now that she was older, she stayed too busy to have a pet. Turning her phone on silent, she placed it in her purse and prayed that no one would have an emergency while she finished her work. Fighting the urge to send Dylan something funny back, she managed to finish everything before leaving the office at a reasonable hour.
Turning on the radio, Dru Hillâs âHow Deep is Your Loveâ immediately asked the question she was dying to have answered. She changed the station, only to hear Chaka Khanâs âEverlasting Loveâ instead.
The world was conspiring against her.
She turned off the radio for the rest of the ride, preferring to sit in silence than let the lyrics suck her into a line of thought best left alone. After all, regardless of what Dylan said of their kiss, he could have made his feelings known to her at any time over the last few years. Instead, he let that socialite-wannabe get her hooks into him, wasting so much time they could have spent together.
By the time she arrived at her house, London was calm and focused. She would move forward with her career plans, and maybe even apply for the more senior open position at her company. It would require her to focus most of her time on the job, but the money was excellent, and it wasnât as if she was in a relationship or had a family of her own to consider.
Placing the car in park and shutting off the engine, London was so focused on her future plans, she realized she had never turned her ringer back on.
Four missed calls. All from Mia. There must be a new club she wanted to check out. Normally, she would be game, but tonight she wanted to take a hot soak and go to bed instead of dressing up and having people step on her toes while some guy in extra fragrant cologne decided she was the flavor of the night. She unlocked her phone hit the dial button while opening the front door.
âGirl! Itâs about time you called me back! Iâve got VIP passes to Charlieâs!â
âI would, Mia, but youâve had me out every weekend for the past three weeks. Even us superwomen need a slow night every now and then.
